First held in 1982 and starting from Burslem, the Potteries Marathon was soon moved to Trentham Gardens.

The last race was held in 2004, but after dwindling numbers and increasing costs it was decided to change to a half marathon to gain more interest

As Trentham Gardens was no longer a suitable start point it was relocated to Hanley Town Centre and renamed the ‘Potters ‘Arf.’ Since the initial ‘Arf marathon in 2005 the race has grown in popularity with over 2000 runners and is now attracting fantastic spectator support associated with full marathons and is widely regarded as one of the most challenging races in the Country.

On Sunday, 11th June 2017, over 40 of our brave staff took part in the gruelling 13.1 mile Potters ‘Arf marathon, to raise money for the children’s centre at the Royal Stoke University Hospital.  With 16 running, 17 walking and 8 taking part in the relay it was truly a Team bjb effort across our branch network and Head Office.

Managing Director, James Beardmore, one of our runners, wanted to support the hospital for looking after his daughter: “Three and a half years ago my Four-year-old daughter Amelia had hip dysplasia and she was looked after at the hospital.  They did such a good job.  They were superb.  She is now 100 per cent better and I wanted to support the hospital for everything that they did for Amelia”.

In total, Team bjb raised an impressive £3,688.80. James Beardmore, Paul Lucas, Ian Cheetham and of course our bee, had the pleasure of visiting University Hospital Children’s centre to present our cheque.  Matron Janet Hagan was delighted to receive this on behalf of the hospital and expressed her wishes to thank Team bjb for all the hard work and dedication endured in raising this huge amount.

Raising money for such a worthy cause last year, gave us the impetus to continue with this passion, as such we have selected an equally deserving charity this year – Magic Moments. Magic Moments charity is dedicated to helping young children suffering life limiting illnesses and their families - this is achieved by helping to make youngsters' dreams come true. Magic Moments also donate money to children's hospices across the UK, giving support where essential equipment is needed.

As we approach our 2nd Potters ‘Arf marathon, it’s clear last year’s punishing event has not dampened the great bjb spirit. A superb 53 bjb employees will be taking part!
